Green Bay Packers Take Exciting Swing on Rising-Star if PFF NFL Mock Draft Is Right

The Green Bay Packers have been a consistent contender in the National Football League for decades. While they’ve failed to win their division only six times, this could be one of those occasions where it happens. The Packers are taking an exciting swing on North Carolina State quarterback Jacoby Brissett with their first-round pick.

The “top 300 nfl draft prospects 2022” is a mock draft that was created by PFF. The Packers took an exciting swing on the rising-star if the mock draft is right.

The Green Bay Packers are in need of wide receiver assistance, and it looks that they want to use their draft capital to do it.

The Packers could surely trade for an accomplished wide receiver with four choices in the top 100 of the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. Another alternative is to choose a potential superstar, which Pro Football Focus predicts Green Bay will do with the 22nd overall choice.

Come on down, Christian Watson.

Christian Watson, a WR from North Dakota State, is a PFF mock choice for the Packers at No. 22.

PFF’s two-round mock draft can be seen here, but the takeaway for the Packers is that some of the best wideouts have already been selected.

Garrett Wilson of Ohio State was the Washington Commanders’ first wide receiver off the board at No. 11. Drake London of USC was selected No. 15 by the Philadelphia Eagles. PFF projected that the Chicago Bears would trade down to No. 16 to get Ohio State’s Chris Olave, while the Los Angeles Chargers would choose Alabama wideout Jameson Williams at No. 17.

That’s a big run on wideouts, but it’s also worth remembering that the position is deep and skilled in this class. With guys like Arkansas’ Treylon Burks and Penn State’s Jahan Dotson still available, PFF expects the Packers will take a gamble on a wide receiver who has been climbing the boards recently.

Here’s what they had to say:

Watson has been one of the more impressive rises in the draft in recent months. Last year, the 6-foot-4, 208-pound wideout got an 89.5 receiving grade while averaging 4.33 yards per route run in the Bison’s run-heavy scheme. He then had one of the better Senior Bowl performances at the position, placing in the top three in PFF grade in one-on-ones. Watson drew the attention of coaches, scouts, and executives at the event, and his great combine performance added to the buzz.

Why Watson might be a good fit for the Green Bay Packers

The Packers are well aware that they have a wideout problem. It’s been addressed by everyone from Brian Gutekunst to head coach Matt LaFleur to President and CEO Mark Murphy.

It’s difficult to replace a talent like Davante Adams, but the Packers will have to attempt… Watson would be an excellent place to begin.

In his senior season at North Dakota State, he caught 43 receptions for 800 yards and seven scores, but those stats don’t tell the whole picture about him as a wideout potential.

To begin with, bear in mind that NDSU’s attack is heavily reliant on the run, so putting up those statistics for the Bison is noteworthy. He also had an 18.6 yard per catch average, indicating that he is a big-play receiver. Without Adams and with Marquez Valdes-Scantling now with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers absolutely need that.

Watson also has the physical characteristics that Gutekunst seeks in wide receivers. He is 6-foot-5 and weighs 208 pounds, making him a good match for the Packers’ conventional wideout profile. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.36 40, which was the sixth-best time among wideouts and the best time among the guys most considered first-round picks.

Consider the fact that OSU’s Garrett Wilson ran a 4.38 and is widely regarded as the best wideout prospect in his class.

Matt LaFleur, the Packers’ head coach, needs speed.

We know that head coach Matt LaFleur feels the Packers’ wide receiver group needs to be restocked with speed. At the NFL owners meetings recently, he said as much.

According to ESPN, LaFleur said, “Certainly, if you look at our squad right now, we obviously need to acquire more pace in that room.” “We need a legitimate individual who can remove the top layer of covering.” We lost someone who was quite excellent at it.”

Watson has the big-play speed that LaFleur seeks, and his ability to rip a defense apart will always transfer to the NFL level. But he isn’t merely a straight-line runner. Watson gets excellent separation regardless of the path he takes, and he can also be utilized on jet sweeps and moves, which is something LaFleur must be aware of.

Watson, who spent four seasons at North Dakota, has the potential to be a good cold-weather wide receiver. In more ways than one, he’s a good fit for the Pack.

It’s a good match for Green Bay, and supporters should be overjoyed if the Packers can get Watson in the first round. It’s wonderful to draft him at No. 22, but it’s even better if they’re patient and feel he may slide to No. 28.

In any case, he’d be a fantastic acquisition to a team in desperate need of wide receivers.

ESPN and Pro Football Reference provided the statistics. Spotrac provides contract information.
